TMC leader Somen Mitra resigns, joins Congress

Trinamool Congress leader Somen Mitra has quit the party today and will be joining the Congress formally. He has submitted his resignation to Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar.

In 2013, alleging breakdown of law and order, Mitra had announced he would quit the party and return to the Congress.

"Congress is my mother party. I made a mistake by joining the Trinamool. I have realised it. I want to undo the mistake by rejoining the Congress," Mitra had said.

Mitra had said that to adhere to ethics, he would not join the Congress while remaining a Trinamool member of Parliament.
