Statement by minister based on newspaper reports, not facts

Union Minister for Overseas Affairs Vayalar Ravi has been reported as telling the media on Monday morning that the Devyani Khobragade issue was over, but the minister, it seems, clearly spoke out of turn and without full knowledge of the facts.

When Rediff.com asked Ravi for details of how the matter, which has bedevilled ties between the US and India, was sorted out, this is what he had to say:

"I don't deal with that subject. There is no official confirmation about it. When the media asked me if the issue was resolved I said the issue seems to be resolved based on what I read in a newspaper today."

Naturally, Uttam Khobragade, Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade's father, was peeved at the statement. Earlier, when Rediff.com asked him how he was not aware that his daughter had been cleared of any wrongdoing in the Sangita Richards case, this is what he had to say: "Go and ask Vayalar Ravi."
