Appoint regulator to monitor environmental clearances: SC to Centre
January 06, 2014  16:17
The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to appoint an independent national regulator to monitor environmental clearances given by the Ministry of Environment and Forest.

The Apex court has given the deadline of two months to the government for the same.

Earlier also the SC had asked the Centre to appoint a regulator because of growing criticism in the recent past over delay in key proposals being passed.

However, the Centre has been opposed to the idea because they according to them, the move will encroach upon the authority of the Environment Minister and other bodies like the National Green Tribunal.

The outline of the process has not been specified by the apex court.
