No scrapping of polls in Bangladesh: PM
January 02, 2014  21:45
Accusing opposition leader Khaleda Zia of taking the country hostage, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today ruled out the cancellation of general polls on January 5 and asked the people to actively participate in the elections to uphold democracy.

"We had taken oath as an elected government to uphold democracy. That's why the elections will take place on January 5 in accordance with constitutional norms," Hasina said in a nationally televised address, accusing her arch-rival Zia of shunning dialogue and rejecting an offer to share power in an interim administration.
