New drug law to relieve pain gor Indias chronically ill

Thousands of cancer patients suffer because access to morphine, the opium-based drug to treat pain caused by cancer, AIDS and other serious illnesses, is heavily-restricted in India.

That could all change if the Indian Parliament passes amendments this month to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.

The bill, expected to be discussed in the ongoing session of Parliament, simplifies procedures to obtain and stock opioid-based medication.
