The government is likely to allow  UIDAI, which issues unique identification numbers to residents, to start enrolments tomorrow in areas other than the 18 states and Union territories allocated to it for the purpose.

According to an official source, the Cabinet Committee on Unique identification Authority of India will discuss on Tuesday the proposal of the Planning Commission to allow UIDAI to start enrolments in states and union territories which were not part of its mandated operations.

The Cabinet committee could not discuss the proposal last Thursday in its scheduled meeting due to paucity of time.

The Commission's proposal is based on the view that this is required to speed up collection of biometric details of residents for issuing them Aadhaar numbers as well as a National Multi-purpose Identity Cards.
