23:21   Abandoned Pakistani boat found in Kutch
A Pakistani boat was today found abandoned at 'Harami Nala' near Sir Creek area in Kutch of Gujarat by the BSF, an official said.

"The BSF seized the Pakistani boat at Harami Nala area in Kutch during routine patrolling," the official said on condition of anonymity, without giving out any further detail.

He said the boat was found at the tri-junction post inside the Indian territory.

According to BSF sources, they have intensified vigil in the area after the incident, to foil infiltration bid, if any.

In a similar incident last month, a Pakistani boat was found abandoned near the Harami Nala area.

Harami Nala is a marshy, sluggish and shallow water channel, spread over 500 sq km on the India-Pakistan border here, which has in the past witnessed many intrusions from Pakistani fishermen. The marshy topography makes it difficult for troops to react swiftly against infiltration.

Both India and Pakistan are engaged in a political battle over this area, which may be rich in oil and gas, and the brackish water which makes for good fishing grounds.

23:19   School massacre 'Pakistan's 9/11': minister
A Taliban massacre at a school is "Pakistan's 9/11", the country's top foreign policy official said today, saying the assault that left 149 dead would change the country's approach to fighting terror.

The attack on an army-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar horrified the world and drew promises of swift retribution for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which claimed it.

Sartaj Aziz, foreign affairs and national security advisor to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, said the assault, the deadliest terror attack in Pakistan's history, was a "game changer".

"This has shaken the entire Pakistani society to the core, and in many ways it's a threshold in our strategy for countering terrorism," he told AFP in an interview.

"Just like 9/11 changed the US and the world forever, this 16/12 is kind of our mini 9/11."

Pakistan has long been accused of playing a double game with militants groups, supporting those it thinks it can use for its own strategic ends, particularly in Afghanistan and disputed Kashmir.

But Aziz said that way of thinking was at an end after Tuesday, when heavily-armed fighters went from room to room at the school, gunning down children.

22:49   Putin invites North Korean leader to Moscow: spokesman
President Vladimir Putin has invited North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un for celebrations next year to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in World War II, Russian news agencies said Friday, citing his spokesman.

"Yes. Such an invitation was sent," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS news agency.

Moscow is due to hold grand celebrations next year for the 70th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union.

Five years earlier in 2010, Russia held the biggest military parade since the collapse of the Soviet Union and invited a slew of leaders including China's then-president Hu Jintao and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Russia is one of North Korea's few allies, along with China. Both have opposed the United Nations' call for Pyongyang to be referred to the International Criminal Court over its human rights record.

The late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visited Russia in August 2011 in his personal train for a rare meeting with then Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.

22:06   LIVE! Hindu outfit plans to 'finish' Islam, Christianity by 2021
Stoking a fresh controversy after conversion plans in Aligarh, Hindu outfit Dharm Jagran Manch, which had planned a conversion programme in Aligarh, said that it plans to "finish" Islam and Christianity by 2021.

"We have so far ensured 'ghar wapsi' (reconversion) of three lakh Muslims and Christians back to Hinduism. By 2021, we will finish Islam and Christianity," Manch head Rajeshwar Singh Singh said here yesterday.

"We have not done any conversion. We have ensured 'ghar wapsi'. Why they (political parties) did not utter a word when Hindus are converted? What's their objection when we ensure that they come back to the religion?" he asked.

His organisation had planned a mass conversion programme in Aligarh on the Christmas day but later called it off.

On Agra conversion, he said that those converted were Indians and not Bangladeshis and they had affidavits of those who participated in the programme.

20:59   Pak Red Mosque cleric calls anti-Taliban fight 'un-Islamic'
The hardline cleric of Pakistan's infamous Red Mosque today stoked fresh controversy by calling the military offensive against Taliban militants in the North Waziristan region 'un-Islamic'.

Abdul Aziz, who survived a 2007 military operation against militants hiding in the mosque when he was caught trying to escape wearing a burqa, said he can prove that the military operation was against the teachings of Islam.

"This operation in the North Waziristan is un-Islamic," Aziz said. "I can debate this issue...call scholars from abroad -- from India and Bangladesh -- and I will prove that this operation is un-Islamic," he said.

Aziz in a TV appearance after Tuesday's Peshawar school attack in which 148 people died refused to unconditionally condemn the attack claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

He has hypocritically expressed grief at the loss of life, and said the TTP's response to the military operation was understandable.

18:21   Oops! Facebook deletes Subramanian Swamy's real page, keeps parody page
You can't make this stuff up. A few days after BJP leader Subramanian Swamy threatened Facebook over a parody page run in his name, his "real" Facebook page, run by Shankhnad and apparently endorsed by him, has vanished from the social media site.

India Today reported that Facebook had deleted his "real" page while the parody page -- the screenshot is above -- was still alive.

The real page is still available in Google cache. The page -- which is actually "Dr. Subramanian Swamy fan page managed by ShankhNaad Team" has over a million likes.

In comparison the parody account has around 19,000 likes. On December 14, Swamy on Twitter had slammed the parody accounts run in his name on Facebook.

From his Twitter account, which is verified, he said, " Desperate Congi & Aaptards seeing the huge knock out response of PTs have resorted to parody accounts. Facebook must act or face legal notice."

It looks like someone at the Facebook noticed it and decided to take some action.

However, considering the teams that curate Facebook content are based outside India, they probably (and erroneously) may have figured out that the page run by Shankhnad is the parody page.

This could explain why the page has suddenly vanished.

NASA's planet-hunting Kepler spacecraft which is carrying out a new mission has made its first exoplanet discovery - a 'super-Earth' located 180 light-years from Earth.

Lead researcher Andrew Vanderburg, a graduate student at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, studied publicly available data collected by the spacecraft during a test of the new K2 mission in February 2014.

This led to the discovery of a planet, HIP 116454b, which is 2.5 times the diameter of Earth and follows a close, nine-day orbit around a star that is smaller and cooler than our Sun, making the planet too hot for life as we know it.

HIP 116454b and its star are 180 light-years from Earth, toward the constellation Pisces.

In the bloodiest terror attack in Pakistan in years, at least 148 people, mostly children, were killed by heavily-armed Taliban suicide bombers who stormed an Army-run school in Peshawar and took several hostages.

The Pakistan's cricket team is planning to visit the Army school in Peshawar and pay tributes. Shahid Afridi, who is leading the national team in the ODI series against New Zealand, wants to go to the school with the team and the Pakistan Cricket Board has supported the plan.

We want to show them we remember them all the time," said Javed Afridi, who is the CEO of Haier Pakistan -- the company which is sponsoring the ongoing series in the United Arab Emirates.

Terrorists stormed the school this week killing at least 148 people including 132 children.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has already come under criticism for not postponing the fourth one-day international a day after the terrorist attack took place in Peshawar.

"The players want to go to the school and share the grief with the students and teachers. They want to pay tributes to the innocent slain students and teachers. They will hand over the ODI series trophy if they win it to the school," Javed added.

12:29   Such a long nightmare
For the most part, the language we have used to describe the massacre of 132 school children in Peshawar has consisted of cliches -- the perpetrators were evil, cowardly, animals.

This language of righteous rage tells us next to nothing about the perpetrators and why they acted as they did. The Taliban's justification of the carnage may be self-serving, but it also tells us that their acts had context.

It is important to understand this context, because the ideals that drove the perpetrators are inexorably shaping Pakistan's destiny, no matter what the outcome of the war between the state and the Taliban might be.

The security of Tihar jail has been beefed up after intelligence inputs were received that the high profile prison may be targeted by terror outfits to free jailed terrorists.

The high-security prison, which already has a three-layer security apparatus, was on Thursday enhanced further after the inputs.

Delhi Police is already on a high alert after a home ministry advisory alerting about a possible LeT strike in the city.

"Tihar houses many hardcore terrorists and other high-profile inmates, their security remains our priority. 11:01   Pak govt takes 26/11 terrorist Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi in custody
The international outrage over a Pakistan court granting bail to Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi seems to have worked. The Pakistan government took him into custody under the Maintenance of Public Order.

This comes a day after an anti-terrorism court granted bail to the mastermind and handler of the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Lakhvi, who was involved in planning, financing and executing the attacks on Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, was granted bail yesterday in the afternoon. The Pakistan government has also decided to appeal against the bail in a high court.

Yesterday, India called upon Pakistan to immediately take steps to reverse the decision to grant bail to the LeT terrorist.

The government asserted that there can be no selective approaches to terrorism. The grant of bail to Lakhvi will serve as a reassurance to terrorists who perpetrate heinous crimes.

"Given the scale of the tragedy Pakistan faced in recent days, it is incumbent on it to realise no compromise can ever be made with terrorists. India can't accept that Zaki-ur Lakhvi, a key conspirator of the Mumbai attacks and a UN designated terrorist, is being released on bail," the ministry of external affairs said.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, "99 per cent evidence for 26/11 is in Pakistan, the 1% we have has been handed to Pakistan. It is incumbent on the government of Pakistan to provide us that evidence."

10:13   Lakhvi bail 'mocks Pak's commitment to fight terror': India
India today officially conveyed to Pakistan its strong concerns and sentiments of its people on the bail granted to Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

"We have communicated to Pakistan through diplomatic channels our strong concerns on the matter and the sentiments across country that this will make mockery of Pakistan's commitment to fight terror groups without making distinctions," Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, said.

"We have seen the prosecution of the seven accused in the anti- terror court in Islamabad. The repeated postponement, adjournments, unavailability of law officers or witnesses is well documented. However, the move yesterday to grant bail to Lakhvi has taken this saga to another level," Akbaruddin said.

Two important pages from the files pertaining to the Robert Vadra-DFL deal have gone missing from Haryana government records.

The pages have found to be missing after IAS officer Ashok Khemka filed a RTI plea. Khemka was relegated to the archives department after he exposed the discrepancy in mutation pertaining to Vadra-DLF land deals.

The files belonged to the panel formed by the Hooda government that gave Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, a clean chit.

09:18   Pak to appeal against 26/11 conspirator Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi's bail
NDTV reports: The Pakistan government has said it will appeal against the bail granted to top Lashkar-e-Tayiba commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, accused of plotting the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai in 2008.

The Pakistan government believes it has a strong case against Lakhvi.

Lakhvi was granted bail yesterday by an anti-terror court in Islamabad which said the prosecution has been unable to provide evidence against him. He was among seven people arrested in the Mumbai attacks trial in Pakistan in 2009.

An outraged India told Pakistan that the release of Lakhvi on bail was unacceptable to it and demanded immediate steps for reversal of the decision.

In a sharp reaction to the bail granted to 54-year-old United Nations-designated terrorist by a Rawalpindi court, New Delhi told Islamabad that there could be no selective approach to terrorism, emphasising that it should realise that no compromise can ever be made with terrorists.

08:47   Sania & I have a strong relationship: Shoaib Malik rubbishes divorce rumours
Pakistan cricket's senior all-rounder Shoaib Malik insists that he is having a happy married life with Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and that there are no differences or problems between the couple.

"Even now I and Sania are together in Dubai and we love to spend as much time as possible together. But being professional athletes we have to also fulfill our other commitments but it does not mean our marriage is on the rocks," Malik was quoted as saying by the Jang newspaper.

He was apparently responding to reports in the Pakistani and Indian media about his marriage being in trouble. The Pakistani media has also highlighted the fact that Malik was seen moving around with actor Humaima Malik and her family.

But Malik insisted that Humaima was only a good friend. "I and Sania have a strong relationship and we knew before we got married it would not be easy. But at times it gets frustrating reading baseless stories about our marriage," he said.

03:36   US Secret Service needs overhaul, White House a better fence: review
The US Secret Service is in dire need of an overhaul that requires an outside leader, an infusion of agents and more training -- not to mention a better fence -- to protect the White House, an independent review concluded on Thursday.

An executive summary of the highly classified review revealed deep problems at the top of the Secret Service, which is charged with guarding the US president and other senior government officials.

"Some of the changes address isolated problems, with well-defined options to solve them, while others will require far more study by, we hope, a dynamic, new management team that will lead the Service into the future," the summary said.

The panel said the agency will also require more special agents and uniformed division personnel who work an "unsustainable number of hours."

03:32   Uber driver accused of raping passenger in Boston
An Uber driver in Boston, US, has been charged with kidnapping and raping a customer of the ride-sharing service, in another potentially damaging case for the rapidly expanding company.

Alejandro Done, 46, allegedly drove a woman he picked up to a secluded area and then assaulted her in the back seat earlier this month. He pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Wednesday, the Boston Globe reports.

Uber says Done had passed a background check.

"This is a despicable crime and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim during her recovery," Uber spokesperson Kaitlin Durkosh said in a statement to CBS Boston.

"Uber has been working closely with law enforcement and will continue to do everything we can to assist their investigation."

The ride-sharing company is coming under increasing scrutiny in the US and abroad over regulatory and safety concerns as it expands to more than 50 countries. Several countries have moved to outlaw Uber services, and New Delhi banned Uber earlier this month days after a female passenger accused her Uber driver of rape.

02:05   If North Korea hacked Sony, hit Kim's cronies where it counts
Moviemakers strive to outdo themselves with fantastic plots, super-heroes and special effects. But the hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment this month proves that, even in Hollywood, reality is still stranger than fiction.

US officials have now determined that North Korea was behind the devastating cyber attack.

The rogue nation is also linked to the terrorist threats against any movie theaters that show Sonys The Interview, a comedy thriller about a US plot to assassinate North Korea's 31-year-old supreme leader, Kim Jong-un.

But fingering Pyongyang will do little to lower the risks to the US film industry without new defenses at home and action abroad.

Hollywood's vulnerabilities also pale beside the broader national-security issues raised by the scale of the attack. Kim has thrown down the cyber gauntlet and the question is: What is Washingtons response?

02:02   US airstrikes kills 3 Islamic State leaders
American airstrikes have killed two top-level and one mid-level ISIS leader, a senior US military official told CNN.

Haji Mutazz was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's deputy in Iraq; Abd al Basit was his military emir in Iraq; and Radwan Talib was his Mosul emir.

Their deaths resulted from multiple strikes going back to mid-November -- it has taken until now to determine conclusively they were killed.

"I can confirm that since mid-November, targeted coalition airstrikes successfully killed multiple senior and mid-level leaders within the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant," said Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby, in a statement on Thursday.

"We believe that the loss of these key leaders degrades ISIL's ability to command and control current operations against Iraqi Security Forces, including Kurdish and other local forces in Iraq," he said.

01:53   17 Pakistani terrorists set to be executed
Jail authorities in Pakistan have started making arrangements in different parts of the country for the execution of 17 dreaded terrorists in the next few days after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced lifting of a moratorium on the death penalty.

Sharif's announcement came after a round table conference of political parties soon after the deadly terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar in which at least 132 schoolchildren were massacred.

According to media reports today jail authorities in Karachi, Faisalabad, Lahore and Sukkur have been given instructions to start making preparations for the execution of 17 high profile terrorists who have been sentenced to death.

These include Aqeel alias Usman, the mastermind of the terrorist attack on the Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi who is presently jailed in Faisalabad, Niaz Muhammad who carried out the attempted assassination bid on former military dictator Pervez Musharraf, Nur Badshah who carried out an attack on former Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, and Sheikh Omar Saeed in
Hyderabad jail who is facing death for the killing of American journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002, and Fazal Hameed.

The last execution was carried out in Pakistan in 2008 after which the government imposed a moratorium on carrying out death sentences.

Also today, army chief General Raheel Sharif signed the death warrant of six hardcore terrorists, pending execution, by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM).

Sources said that the men are expected to be executed within the next 48 hours.

01:25   Sony hack done by a sophisticated actor: White House
The White House said on Thursday that US officials were treating a cyber attack on Sony Pictures as a serious national security matter and that President Barack Obama's National Security Council was considering a proportionate response.

Obama's top national security officials have met daily about the attack, which was done by a "sophisticated actor," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

But Earnest said he was not in a position to confirm North Korea was responsible for the attack, and said the federal investigation was progressing.

01:15   FIFA ethics investigator resigns over alleged corruption
FIFA ethics investigator Michael Garcia resigned on Wednesday in protest at the way his report into allegations of corruption in awarding the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar was handled by the soccer governing body's ethics judge.

Former US prosecutor Garcia said in a statement that he had lost confidence in the independence of the ethics committee's adjudicatory chamber after judge Hans-Joachim Eckert issued a 42-page statement in November based on the report.

The credibility of Zurich-based FIFA's ability to police itself has been questioned inside the sport and Garcia's comments appeared to deal another blow to the organization. It has been fending off corruption allegations since the Gulf state was awarded the 2022 tournament four years ago. Qatar has denied the allegations.

Garcia, whose report has not been made public, said it was "the lack of leadership" on ethics issues within FIFA "that leads me to conclude that my role in this process is at an end.

"No independent governance committee, investigator or arbitration panel can change the culture of an organization," the statement issued through his Chicago-based law firm, Kirkland & Ellis, said.

01:02   Leaked CIA report admits to failure of 'targeted killings'
A secret CIA review by the Office of Transnational Issues on the use of High-Value Targeting, "in other words, capture and killing of important enemy military targets for the United States", as part of an overall counterinsurgency strategy has been released by WikiLeaks.

The 18-page study titled, "Making High-Value Targeting Operations an Effective Counterinsurgency Tool", and distributed on June 7, 2009, is labeled as Secret//NOFORN, meaning that it has the second-highest classified categorization considered a 'serious threat to US national security if leaked' and is strictly off limits to foreign nationals.

The study provides an overall assessment of the use of HVT, relying "on clandestine and defense attache reporting, discussions with HVT practitioners, a CIA-sponsored study on HVT operations in counterinsurgencies, and our review of current and historical case studies".

00:57   Lesson of the Sony hack: Jump to the erasable Internet
This month's news provides yet another occasion for a friendly public-service reminder to anyone who uses a digital device to say anything to anyone, ever.

Don't do it. Don't email, don't text, don't update, don't send photos.

At least, don't do it if you have any expectation that what you say will remain private -- a sentiment that's usually taken for granted in human communication, but that we should all throw to the winds, at least until we figure out a way to completely rethink how we store and manage our digital data.

Because here's the thing about the digital world that we must remember.

Nothing you say in any form mediated through digital technology -- absolutely nothing at all -- is guaranteed to stay private.

00:26   Pak American arrested for defrauding Hajj pilgrims
A Pakistani American national has been arrested in Chicago on charges of defrauding Hajj pilgrims, the US Justice Department said today.

Rashid Minhas, 42, a resident of Chicago, is scheduled to be produced before a city court later in the day.

Chicago-based travel agent Minhas has been accused of federal fraud for allegedly cheating at least 50 customers of approximately USD 525,000 by misrepresenting his ability to sell travel packages for the Hajj pilgrimage that included visas required to enter Saudi Arabia.

Quite a substantial amount of this money was sent to Pakistan, federal authorities said.

According to the complaint affidavit, between March and November 2014, Minhas falsely represented that Hajj travel packages for September and October of this year required Saudi Arabia entry visas.

Minhas allegedly knew that Light Star Hajj travel agency was not authorised by Saudi Arabia to obtain visas and that he did not intend to obtain the required Hajj visas.

He sold travel deals to at least 50 customers and deposited approximately $525,000 he collected into Light Star's bank accounts, and then commingled those funds with other deposits and used the money to make partial refunds to customers, to transfer funds to Pakistan, and to pay personal expenses, the complaint alleges.

00:26   Boko Haram kidnaps 185 women and children, kills 32 people
Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped at least 185 women and children, and killed 32 people in a raid in northeastern Nigeria this week, local officials and residents said.

Gunmen in pickup trucks attacked the village of Gumsuri, just north of Chibok, on Sunday, shooting down men before herding women and children together.

"They gathered the women and children and took them away in trucks after burning most of the village with petrol bombs," a local government official said on condition anonymity for fear of reprisal.

News of the attack took four days to emerge because of a lack of communication. Telecommunications towers in the region had been disabled in previous attacks.

Local officials learned of the attack from residents who fled to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, where the officials had moved a year ago to escape Boko Haram attacks.
