When Akhtar Shaikh, senior art director with Rediff.com, left his gym in Vashi on Wednesday at around 8 pm, he as usual expected to head home to his wife and family.

As he kicked his Royal Enfield motorcycle to life and was about to cruise on to the highway, what seemed like an altercation caught his attention. Stopping to enquire, he found that a young girl was being harassed by three guys.

Tired of reading news reports of passers-by seldom helping people, especially young women, in distress, the well-built Akhtar decided to intervene.

It was three versus one, but it didn't faze him. While two of the assailants managed to flee, but not before hitting Akhtar on the arm with a metal club-like object, he managed to get hold of one of them and handed him over to the police patrol van.

Akhtar is now in hospital with a fractured arm, but says he is glad he stood up for what was right.
