Last force-fed on Wednesday, Irom Sharmila refuses medical check-up

Inside a tin shack not far from a jail hospital from where she was released on Wednesday, Irom Sharmila continues her 14-year fast in protest against army atrocities in Manipur.

It is almost 40 hours since she was last force-fed through a nasal tube, and her supporters are increasingly worried.

In late night drama on Thursday, the frail 42-year-old activist refused to let doctors examine her and a team of policemen failed to persuade her.

"I have said I will not allow a medical check-up. I don't know why they are disturbing me," said Sharmila, who was sleeping when the doctor and the police arrived, after 10 pm.
