Kerala introduces new alcohol policy

The Congress-led United Democratic Front in Kerala, which met today to discuss the liquor policy of the government, decided to bring in prohibition in a phased manner. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said Kerala will allow only 5-star hotels to serve liquor from April 1, 2015, with every Sunday as dry days. It has been decided not to reopen the 418 liquor bars that were closed on March 31, 2014. The remaining 313 bars will be closed down next year. Additionally, Chandy said that they were planning a prohibition on the sale of alcohol in the next 10 years.
