It's undeniably the most viral video/image on social media. Celebrities agreeing to be dunked with a bucket of ice cold water, in the name of charity.

George Bush has done it, so has Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, and our own Bollywood brigade, in the persona of Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Bipasha Basu etc have all done it.

The ice bucket challenge, as it is called, has transformed the way we do charity, it seems.

And now comes news that the co-founder of the challenge, Corey Griffin, has died, at the age of 27. By drowning.

Griffin had attended fundraiser in Nantucket island, Massachusetts on Friday night, after which, at around 2 am, he jumped into the sea for a swim, only to meet his death. The charity event is said to have raised $ 100,000 (Rs 60 lakh).

Corey was friends with Pete Frates, 29, who was diagnosed with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neuro degenerative disease, in 2012. Frates's family and friends then launched the challenge to raise money for research into ALS.

Corey promoted the challenge, and took it big on the internet.
