Just in: The Juvenile Justice Bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. The Cabinet had last week amended the act paving the way for empowering the Juvenile Justice Board to decide if minors between the ages of 16 and 18 should be tried as adults for heinous crimes like rape and murder.

The amendment will give the magistrate the power to decide if a juvenile involved in a heinous crime should be sent to a correction facility or tried by a regular court. But these suspects cannot be given the death sentence or life imprisonment.

The amendment was spearheaded by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi.
