The Congress today demanded an explanation from Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the transfer and sacking of Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal. "Governors are constitutional authorities and cannot be trifled with. Sacking of Beniwal is a violation of the Supreme Court order. It is vindictive," the Congress said.

She was sacked yesterday two months before tenure ended. The 87-year-old had been shifted from Gujarat to Mizoram exactly a month ago.

Beniwal had sharp differences with Narendra Modi, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat.

Rajnath Singh was quoted as saying, "We have taken a decision...we will not be able to give the reason."
