Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi joined protesting MPs to the well of the house demanding a debate and discussion on spiraling communal violence in the country and the communal violence bill. When Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed the debate, Rahul said that the Lok Sabha Speaker was partial.

Speaking to TV channels outside Parliament after the Lok Sabha was adjourned, Rahul said, "We are not being allowed to speak, we wanted a discussion. We are upset that only one man's voice counts for anything. The speaker is partial. It is completely one-sided. We aren't being allowed to raise our voice on communal politics. The mentality of the government that discussion is unacceptable."
