Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal sacked

Just In: A statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan has announced that Kamla Beniwal has been been sacked as governor of Mizoram.

Manipur Governor Vinod Kumar Duggal will take additional charge of Mizoram until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Mizoram are made.

It may be noted that 87-year-old Beniwal was transferred to Mizoram barely a month ago for the remainder of her term.

Beniwal had a strained relationship with Narendra Modi when he was chief minister of Gujarat.

Beniwal, who was shunted out of Gujarat and sent to Mizoram where she took charge on July 9, had a running battle with the Modi government over the appointment of Lokayukta and some legislations.

There were at least nine bills that she sent back with remarks or sat on for long, in some cases almost three years. Beniwal's Gujarat tenure was to end in November.
