Coast Guard personnel attack fishermen in Tamil Nadu

Two fishermen of Idinthakarai village were today allegedly assaulted by Indian Coast Guard personnel in the sea, fishermen association sources said. Tirunelveli District Fishermen Federation Secretary Ram alleged that Thommai, 42, and Rochari, 40, were attacked by the ICG personnel, who also robbed them of their catch at a point one nautical mile from the Idinthakarai coast.

A complaint has been lodged with the district collector in this regard, he said. Both the fishermen were using a country boat and were fishing along with 13 others.

They had their fishing permit and ID cards but were allegedly attacked despite producing them, he alleged. Idinthakarai village has been the focal point of the anti-Kudankulam nuclear stir.
