Five Pakistani police die in gun battle with militants

At least five policemen were killed in a shootout with militants in the capital of the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of northwest Pakistan tonight.

Unidentified armed militants ambushed a police mobile van and opened indiscriminate firing in Badabair village, a rural locality in Peshawar, triggering a gun battle, the police said. The firing between the militants and policemen continued for over an hour.

At least five police personnel were killed, including an Inspector, and several others injured in the shootout, police said. The injured and dead were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital. The police have cordoned off the area and a search operation has been launched to nab the culprits.
