LIVE! SC recognises transgenders as the third sex
April 15, 2014  11:09
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has recognised transgenders at the third sex. This comes after a petition, which sought several directions from the Court, including granting of equal rights and protection to transgender persons; inclusion of a third category in recording one's sex/gender in identity documents like the election card, passport, driving license and ration card; and for admission in educational institutions, hospitals, access to toilets, amongst others.

The SC has given its nod for the provision of job and education quotas and medical facilities for transgenders and says transgenders to be treated on par with socially and economically backward sections.
