Live! 'Home minister used clout to swing order for death sentence'

Defence lawyer AP Singh says he will approach the high court today, irrespective of the order, because he believes home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde used his clout to swing the order towards a death sentence.

In the run-up to the conviction on Tuesday, Shinde had reportedly said, "We have brought a new anti-rape law. The men will get the death penalty." The comment, said the lawyer, amounted to influencing the judiciary before the sentence is pronounced.

The judge had however thrown out the contempt plea.
