Explained: WHY India needs a new land bill

Parliament has passed, with an overwhelming majority, the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation & Resettlement Bill.

The bill seeks to give a fair deal to farmers losing their land, especially multi-crop land, to industrial needs. But India Inc has complained that the law would push cost and time-frame for setting up new enterprises.

In an interview with Rediff.com, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had earlier explained why India needed a new land bill.
