"According to family wishes, the writer has been buried in Afghanistan as she was married and settled there. The embassy has issued a general warning to the Indians settled here."

The police said Banerjee was shot dead by suspected terrorists outside her home in Paktika province. Her brother-in-law was also murdered a few years back in Kolkata.

She had written a popular memoir about her escape from the Taliban. The book about her dramatic escape in 1995 became a best-seller in India and was made into a Bollywood film in 2003 'Escape From Taliban'.
