Forced into the confinement of jail after his bail plea was rejected, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu today sought for his routine diet, gangajal and a special bed besides other facilities which were denied by the jail administration.

His counsel Pradeep Choudhary said Asaram had sought facilities such as his routine food which includes herbs and medicines, gangajal, bed, books and some other material required for his prayer.

"These demands had been made to the jail administration as per jail rules but they were rejected. The rule has a provision under which if any prisoner (undertrial) wants reasonable facilities in the jail, he can be provided upon the discretion of the jail administration.

"All these demands are reasonable considering his age and should be made available to him but since the jail administration rejected the demand, we have to move to the court," said Choudhary.

10:30   PM leaves for G20 summit
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today left for St Petersburg to attend the eighth G20 Summit during which he is expected to push for a coordinated plan to avoid disruption in India and other large developing economies by imminent phasing out of fiscal stimulus by the US Federal Reserve.

While the dispute between Russia and the US over the conflict in Syria is likely to overshadow the two-day summit starting tomorrow in the Russian city, splits between emerging markets and the US over its winding down of stimulus and the slowing growth of India and other four BRICS countries are expected to remain in focus.

Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa -- grouped in the informal BRICS bloc seen as an alternative economic powerhouse -- all go into the meeting experiencing slowing growth, embattled currencies and huge capital outflows.

10:12   Rupee tumbles 92 paise Vs dollar; BSE up 161 pts
The rupee today again breached 68 mark by plunging 92 paise to 68.55 against the US dollar in early trade, mainly on strong demand for the American currency from importers and some banks.

Dealers said heavy capital outflows amid reports that S&P sees more than one-in-three chance of a downgrade of the country's rating and dollar's gain against some overseas currencies on upbeat economic data weighed on the domestic unit.

Besides, concerns over a record high current account deficit and rising crude prices in the global market were other factors behind rupees slide, they said.

However, a higher opening in the domestic equity market after yesterday's steep fall, capped the rupee's decline, they said.

The rupee fell by a whopping 163 paise to close at 67.63 on concern that a build-up of tension over Syria would push oil prices higher and result in a costlier import bill.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex today recovered over 161 points in early trade after yesterday's steep fall, on the back of rally in IT, healthcare and metal sector stocks due to fresh buying by funds and retail investors.

The 30-share barometer rose 161.31 points, or 0.88 per cent, to 18,395.97, supported by increased buying in beaten down bluechip stocks. The index had lost 651.47 points yesterday.

The Prime Minister made a reference to orderly exit from unconventional monetary policies in the backdrop of splits between emerging markets and the US over its winding down of stimulus and the slowing growth of India and other four BRICS countries.

Dr Singh said though there are encouraging signs of growth in industrialised countries, there is also a slowdown in emerging economies which are facing the adverse impact of significant capital outflow.

"I will emphasise in St Petersburg the need for an orderly exit from the unconventional monetary policies being pursued by the developed world for the last few years so as to avoid damaging the growth prospects of the developing world," he said.

A day after top Gujarat IPS officer DG Vanzara quit from his position and accused the state government of having failed to protect the interest of policemen jailed for encounter deaths, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to back Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

While resigning, Vanzara claimed in a 10-page letter that the CM has been shielding Amit Shah, a close aide and former state home minister, at the cost of police officers who fought against "Pakistan inspired terrorism".

As reported by a news channel, Gujarat BJP spokesperson Jai Narayan Vyas today said that Vanzaras resignation doesnt matter as he was already under suspension. Vyas added that it was Vanzaras anger and frustration that had forced him to level such allegations.

09:17   6.5 quake hits east Japan: USGS
A strong 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Japan Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, but local authorities said there was no risk of a tsunami.

The quake struck at 0018 GMT at a depth of 404 kilometres, the USGS said. "The epicentre is in the Pacific, hundreds of kilometres south of Tokyo. We see no risk of a tsunami," a spokesman for the Japanese weather agency said. Fukushima operator TEPCO reported there were no new problems at the stricken nuclear plant.

The quake, measured at 6.9 by Japanese seismologists, was centred on a spot more than 600 kilometres south of Tokyo, the USGS said.

AFP journalists in the Japanese capital reported feeling a long, rumbling quake that shook buildings. They said it was the largest they had felt in the quake-prone city for some time.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power said the earthquake did not cause any additional damage at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the site of the worst nuclear accident in a generation where radioactive waste water has been leaking into the Pacific Ocean.

01:08   Strike on Syria may unleash more turmoil: Ban
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today warned that any "punitive" action taken against Syria for an alleged chemical weapons attack would be illegal without the backing of Security Council and any military action against the country may unleash more turmoil.

Ban called for handling any action against the Syrian regime within the framework of the United Nations charter.

"For any course of actions in the future, depending upon the outcome of a scientific analysis will have to be considered by the Security Council for any action, and that's my appeal, that everything should be handled within the framework of the United Nations charter," Ban told UN reporters during a news conference.

"The use of force is lawful only when -- in exercise of self- defence in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations charter, and/or when the Security Council approves such action. That is the principle of the United Nations," he said in response to a question.

"If confirmed, any use of chemical weapons by anyone under any circumstances will be a serious violation of international law and outrageous war crime," Ban told reporters at a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

00:22   PM meets BJP leaders, bid to end parliamentary standoff fails
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's efforts to reach out to BJP to end the parliamentary stand-off over the missing coal files issue failed tonight with BJP not giving him any assurance on the smooth running of the House tomorrow.

Singh held a meeting with BJP leaders L K Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley late this evening and requested them to cooperate in the passage of important financial legislations in Parliament but the opposition was unmoved and said it will take a call on the issue after a meeting of its senior MPs tomorrow morning.

Asking the opposition to forget the past, the Prime Minister sought BJP's support in passing of important financial legislations including the Pensions Bill and Securities and Exchange Board of India (Amendment) Bill, sources said.

During the nearly 90-minute meeting at the Prime Minister's residence, BJP maintained it is not responsible for the disruptions in Parliament and accused Congress MPs of causing disruptions.

00:18   Speed up video conference facility in jails: HC to Maha govt
The Bombay high court today granted six weeks' time to Maharashtra government to inform it about steps being taken to ensure that video conference facilities were in place in jails for producing accused before courts through this system.

The order was given by a bench headed by Justice P V Hardas on a bunch of PILs which alleged that the accused were not produced in courts due to inadequate or lack of escort services by police resulting in delayed justice to them.

The state said it had already introduced the video conference system in jails but the project had not been completed.

The government sought six months time to file a reply to the PILs but the court allowed only six weeks, saying the issue was important and should be quickly addressed.

The court called upon the Maharashtra State Electricity Board to assist the judicial system by assuring power supply in jails for the purpose of video conference.
