PM to unveil India's first military studies university

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will today lay the foundation stone of the country's first dedicated university for military studies at Gurgaon near New Delhi.

The Indian National Defence University (INDU) was recommended to be set up by a committee formed after the Kargil conflict in 1999 stressing on the need for an institution to deal exclusively with defence and strategic matters.

"The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the INDU at Binola in Gurgaon. The aim of INDU would be to provide military leadership and other civilian officials concerned with emerging security challenges through scholarly research and training," the Defence Ministry said here. 

"The INDU will develop and propagate higher education in defence studies, defence management, defence science and technology and promote policy oriented research related to national defence," it said.
