Former Law Minister Ashwani Kumar on Saturday claimed that he had resigned on Friday to "end the unnecessary controversy over the observations of the Supreme Court, which made no adverse remarks against me".

He added, "People of this country, my friends who stood by me and my colleagues know me for who I am".

Speaking on his resignation, he said, "It is by no stretch of the imagination an admission of wrongdoing. Certain political decisions are taken because they are necessary. I am proud to be a loyal foot soldier of the party".

Kumar also claimed that it was "unfortunate that the reality was not presented".

He added that he had not lost the support of the leaders of his party.

"My conscience is clear, I will be vindicated," he said.
