Update from Mangalore: This was a sure-shot bastion of the BJP party has lost three of its seats here. Krishna Palemar is trailing to the Congress in Mangalore.

Pramod Madhawraj of the Congress from Udupi, U T Khader of Ullal and Vasanth Bangera of Belthangady have all won their seats. All these three candidates are from Mangalore. The Congress is leading in Buntwal and also Mangalore central.

Mangalore was a much hyped constituency as it was considered to be a saffron belt. There are many factors that went against the BJP in this belt. The split in the BJP after Yeddyurappa walked out proved to be costly for the BJP as the field workers remained a split unit. There were incidents such as the home stay attacks, the pub attacks and also the church attacks which proved costly for the BJP. The trend of a BJP loss was witnessed during the urban local body elections.

There was a lot of hope from the Narendra Modi rally in Mangalore, but the Gujarat CM was roped in one day before the close of the campaign and too much was expected out of him.
