May 01, 2013  13:56
President Barack Obama has said the prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba must close, amid a hunger strike by prisoners there.

At the White House, Obama said the detention centre was ''contrary to who we are'' and harmful to US interests.

According to the BBC, Congress has blocked efforts to close the prison, but Obama said he would renew discussions with lawmakers.

Obama said that he had asked a team of officials to review operations at Guantanamo Bay, adding that he was not surprised there were problems there.
