Reports our correspondent from New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi told M K Alagiri, who resigned from his post as Union fertiliser minister, that she was taken by surprise when the DMK withdrew support. "We expected your father to have a word with the PM or me," she told Alagiri.

Alagiri refused to speak to the media. But sources say that at the meeting with Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh he put the onus of the pullout on parliamentary party leader T R Baalu and DMK's heir-apparent M K Stalin.

The PM refused to accept Alagiri's resignation. Dr Singh asked Sonia to me present when he met the Alagiri.
