Where the UPA stands now
March 19, 2013  11:53
With immediate effect (though Karunanidhi has said he is yet to inform President Pranab Mukherjee) 18 DMK MPs in the Lok Sabha have resigned.

This means the strength of the UPA government falls from 295 to 277 in the
Lok Sabha.

So, total strength of House: 540
Halfway mark: 270
UPA with 18 DMK seats: 295, which drops to 277 if the pullout is indeed effective. (Friday  is the deadline for the government).
The DMK pullout therefore means that the UPA is now a minority government.

Subramaniam Swamy has however rubbished the DMK pullout saying if the party was indeed serious, why didn't they write to the President.

The government needs support from all parties if the resolution against Sri Lanka has to be passed on Friday. It may therefore call an all-party meet to decide the next step.
