In India and Pakistan, political parties pick their symbols from a list approved by their country's respective election commissions. Many are borrowed from items of everyday life, and span from the elephant to the toothbrush. This was a practice introduced after the end of British rule to help the large number of illiterate voters in both countries distinguish between political parties in elections.
