Karachi blast threatens Pakistan poll

Another devastating bomb attack on Pakistan's minority Shi'ite community - this time in Karachi - has killed 45 people and injured 150, raising fears the country's spiralling sectarian violence could delay imminent elections and further destabilise its already fragile democracy.

Pakistan's commercial capital was brought to a standstill yesterday after the Sindh provincial government declared a day of mourning for the victims of Sunday night's carnage, the third major attack on the country's Shi'ite Muslims in as many months.

The blast tore through two four-storey apartment buildings and surrounding shops in the mostly Shi'ite-populated suburb of Abbas Town, as worshippers were leaving local mosques in the evening. Fire quickly spread through neighbouring buildings in the heavily built-up street.
