Bangladesh: Khaleda Zia calls off meeting with Pranab
March 04, 2013  08:57
The cycle of violence continued unabated in Bangladesh on Monday.

The government has deployed troops in sensitive regions after violence broke out in the wake of the conviction of an Islamist leader for crimes committed during the 1971 war.

Violence in the country has escalated after a death sentence was handed down to 73-year-old Delwar Hossain Sayedee, vice-president of the Jamaat-e-Islami, by the International Crimes Tribunal.

A two-day strike called by Jamaat, starting on Sunday, has coincided with President Pranab Mukherjee's maiden visit to the country.

Another shutdown has been called by the fundamentalist outfit's alliance partner and main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party led, by Khaleda Zia, on March 5.

Zia also called off a scheduled meeting with Mukherjee on Monday.
