Bodies of six unidentified persons, three of them women, were found floating today in the Ganga river in a remote part of the district.

Police have not ruled out that these bodies could be of pilgrims washed away in the Uttarakhand floods.

According to police spokesman Uma Shankar Shukla,"An information reached Manda police station this afternoon that villagers had noticed a number of corpses floating away in the Ganga river".

"A police team, with help from locals and divers, succeeded in fishing out six bodies. These included three women", he said adding "the corpses are swollen and decomposed which gives an impression that the river current had been carrying these along for quite some time".

"It will be difficult to establish the identity of the deceased as all the bodies are badly disfigured. Nevertheless, photographs are being circulated in the media," he said.
