Food minister KV Thomas says political parties want a special session of Parliament. The BJP wants the Food Bill to be passed in the monsoon session of Parliament with certain amendments.

The government had considered passing the bill as an ordinance, or executive order. This would be a temporary law and only valid until the next session of parliament (the monsoon session) in July. Most political parties have criticised plans to pass the bill without a vote but have not resisted the proposed law altogether, for fear of being seen as anti-poor.

The BJP and the JD-U welcome the decision and say they are open to a special session of Parliament to discuss and pass the bill.
