The US Olympic Committee and the White House today dismissed a call by an influential American Senator asking athletes to boycott the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia if Moscow gives asylum to whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

"If there are any lessons to be learned from the American boycott of 1980, it is that Olympic boycotts do not work,"said Patrick Sandusky, US Olympic Committee spokesman, amid reports that Senator Lindsey Graham has called for boycotting the Olympics in Russia next year if Snowden is given asylum.
