Just in: The Supreme Court has rejected a PIL trying to reduce the age of juveniles held for murder or rape from 18 to 16 years. Those below 18 will continue to be treated as juvenile even in cases of rape and murder.

In effect this means, the juvenile accused of murder and gang rape in the December 16 case in Delhi will be treated as a juvenile. The maximum punishment he can get as a juvenile in the case is three years. A PIL seeking to lower the juvenile age had been filed in the Delhi court after the December 16 incident.
