The CBI has filed its first chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. The CBI filed the chargesheet in the case before the Gujarat high court today. Ishrat was a 19-year-old Mumbai college student who was shot dead along with three others by the Gujarat Police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on 15 June, 2004.
Early reports say that the chargesheet calls the encounter fake and was a joint operation between the IB and the Gujarat police. Murder charges have been slapped on both.
It says further investigation is required in the role of IB official Rajinder Kumar, an accused in the case. Earlier reports on the what the chargesheet would hold had mentioned that there would be a reference to Kumar, but it would be limited.
