Kolkata says no to hosting Salman Rushdie
January 30, 2013  11:08
Salman Rushdie, who has been in India to promote Deepa Mehta's film Midnight's Children and has been having a pleasant stay in Delhi and Mumbai, however will not be allowed to visit Kolkata, reports The Telegraph.

Rushdie was to visit the city today, but it "has been called off at the last minute because of objections raised by the state government and an ultimatum issued by police", the newspaper reported quoting sources.

"Calcutta was supposed to be their last stop. From this afternoon, phone calls from police officers and "a senior minister' were made to the organisers of the Calcutta Book Fair," the Telegraph further reports.
