War of words on Manmohan Singh's red lines

A war of words in on between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's former media advisor Sanjaya Baru and Communist Party of India-Marxist General Secretary Prakash Karat.

In a column on January 23, Baru had stated that despite political constraints, the Prime Minister has jealously guarded his turf on foreign policy and national security.

He said, 'The many expressions of surprise, accompanied by gratuitous remarks about Dr Singh's 'uncharacteristic' toughness, ignore the fact that on vital national security and foreign policy issues, the Prime Minister has always drawn red lines and stuck to them. These red lines have been drawn both with respect to political parties and ministerial colleagues at home and foreign governments.'

Three days later, countering Baru claim that Dr Singh had threatened to impose Presidents rule in West Bengal if the State government failed to discharge its constitutional responsibility of maintaining law and order, Karat termed the story as half-truth.

'Unlike what Mr Baru believes, the only 'red lines' drawn by the Prime Minister, were the ones to protect the pro-US tilt in foreign policy,' he said
