The brutal rape has left our hearts empty: Pranab
January 25, 2013  19:10
India has changed more in the last six decades than it has in the last six centuries, President Pranab Mukherjee said, while addressing the nation on the eve of Republic Day.

We should be proud of our achievements, Mukherjee said in his first such address, adding that poverty had declined significantly in the last six decades and economic growth rate had tripled.

It was time for the nation to change its moral compass, he said.

Taking up the issue of the Delhi gang rape, he said, "Brutal rape of a young woman has left our hearts empty".

The civil society and the government should work together towards gender equality, said President Pranab.
