Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma today justified the protests in Delhi in the wake of gruesome gangrape of a 23-year-old girl, saying that in an aspirational and young society like India, such demonstrations are part of the democracy.

"We not only have an aspirational society, but it is young and assertive society. The problem will be people not coming out on street when there has been a gruesome rape, it is part of the society and democracy," Sharma said at the World Economic Forum meet in Davos.

He made the comments while participating in a session on the topic 'Avoiding the BRIC Wall', that also saw the participation of Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan and Transparency International chair Huguette Labelle, among others.
