A munsif magistrate's court in Nirmal, about 200 km from Hyderabad, on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Akbaruddin Owaisi till February 5 in connection with a hate speech case.

Owaisi had earlier been in custody for a period of 14 days from January 8. That period of custody ended on Tuesday, and the police produced him before a court in Nirmal which extended it further. Owaisi has been sent to the district jail in Adilabad town, about 90 km from Nirmal.

Owaisi was arrested on January 8 for making a hate speech at a public meeting at Nirmal last month. He was placed in judicial custody on January 9.

Owaisi represents the Chandrayangutta assembly constituency in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. He is facing charges of sedition, waging war against the nation and criminal conspiracy.
