My mother came to me, cried, says emotional Rahul

An emotional Rahul Gandhi spoke to the Congress workers about hope and power. Here is what he said.

This morning I woke up and went to the balcony. It was dark and cold and I decided not to tell you only not what you want to hear, but what I want to say.

As a boy I loved to play badminton, I was taught how to play by the policemen who guarded my grandmother; they were my friends. Then they killed my grandmother. They killed her and took the balance away from my life. I felt pain like never before.

My father returned from Bengal. This was the first time I saw my father cry. I saw he was broken.

Then our country was not what it is today. Everyone said we were poor country. That evening I saw my father on TV and I knew he was terrified. But as he spoke I saw a small glimmer of hope.

I still remember what I felt.

Today as I look back I can see that it was that small ray of hope that has changed India. Without hope you cannot change anything.

On power: Last night everyone congratulated me. But last night, my mother came to my room and she sat with me and she cried. She cried cause she can see that the power can be poison. She can see it because she is not attached to it. Don't chase power for the attribute of power but use it to empower the world.

It is my mother's experience and my experience in eight years. We must not forget the negative aspects of power.

Rahul makes a little gaffe. He says, "We are no longer worthless". But corrects himself immediately and says, "Sorry no longer seen as worthless. I am standing here because the Congress is seen as a symbol of hope."

For me, the Congress party is now my life. The people of India are my life and I will fight for the people of India and this party. I will fight with everything I have. I invite you to stand up and take on this fight, he says.
