China should asses its media censorship row: US
January 09, 2013  02:42

Amid demonstrations in China against media censorship, the US today said that it supports freedom of expression but it is upto Beijing to make an assessment of the issue and take action.

"We support freedom of the media, freedom of expression everywhere around the world, including in China, and we believe that censorship of the media is incompatible with China's own aspirations to build a modern, information-based economy and society. As I said, as people become richer, they want to have the ability to speak freely," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters.

"So it's obviously upto the Chinese government to make its own assessments about those things, but we obviously stand on the side of free expression and free media everywhere in the world," she said in response to a question.   "We are all watching with interest as the Chinese people make their views known to their own government, and we will all watch how the government takes this into account," Nuland said.
