AP reports: The police say a man pushed a woman onto subway tracks in Vienna, causing her to break her leg and lay immobile on the rails as workers scrambled to stop the train before it reached the station.

A police statement says the man complained of being disturbed by the woman's loud cell-phone conversation, and that he hit her before shoving her into the pit.

The train was stopped after subway workers pulled an emergency brake, less than a minute before it was due in the station.

State broadcaster ORF said the man uttered racial slurs before pushing the woman, who is black. The incident occurred on Saturday.

Neither the victim nor the suspect, who is being questioned by the police, was identified, in keeping with Austrian practice.
