Obama's Pentagon nominee Hagel clears major hurdle in Senate

Chuck Hagel, US President BarackObama's nominee to head the Pentagon, cleared a major hurdleas the Senate today agreed to bring his nomination to a vote.

Senators of the opposition Republican Party relented topave the way for the Senate to confirm its former member fromNebraska to become the next US Defense Secretary. 

Amidst controversy over his alleged anti-India remarks,that he made in 2011, the Senate with support from a block ofRepublican lawmakers voted 71-27 to end the debate and moveforward with Vietnam combat veteran Hagel's nomination.
