A change of guard in Maharashtra is now certain, say our sources in Delhi. Three names are doing the rounds to replace Prithviraj Chavan as chief minister of the state.

Dr Manmohan Singh wants Chavan, who used to serve as the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, to be accommodated at the highest level, but there is no slot or seat vacant in the Rajya Sabha.

Then again, rumors are rife that Chavan may be be brought as General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee.

What happens depends on Sonia Gandhi's health - as she may be unable to concentrate on the implications of removal of Prithviraj Chavan from Maharashtra.

In all probability, Maharashtra may get a new chief minister soon after the Union Budget, as early as first week of March.
