Pope Benedict: I'm resigning in full freedom

Reuters: A Vatican official says he expects the period between Benedict's resignation and the election of successor to be "as brief as possible". The Vatican also says that Benedict's resignation means the papacy will be vacant until a successor is chosen.

The Pope, meanwhile, says he is resigning in full freedom, and that he is "fully aware of the gravity of this gesture".
