A major controversy seems to be brewing about whether Afzal Guru's family was informed about the hanging.

Some senior lawyers slammed the Union government's reported decision to not inform Guru's family to keep the execution plans under wraps.

Eminent jurist Soli Sorabjee, on the other hand, has said that it is not mandatory to inform a death row convict's family about his execution.
