West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today took up the brush and canvas for bauls (folk singers) to help them by selling her paintings and announced a package of development programmes for them.

"I will donate the sale proceeds of these paintings for helping poor baul singers who have been neglected over the years," the chief minister said inaugurating 'Mati Utsav' (Earth Festival) here in Burdwan district near Durgapur.

The chief minister was accompanied in her efforts by painters Jogen Chowdhury and Suvaprasanna and in the presence of 86-year-old social activist Mahashweta Devi.

The chief minister announced that baul songs and the percussion instruments used by them like 'madal' and 'dhol' be used in government campaigns and advertisements for creating social awareness.

"This will help the baul singers in their economic distress to some extent and ensure effectiveness of government campaigns and advertisements," she said.
