February 01, 2013  11:39
The Supreme Court today directed the police not to arrest sociologist Ashis Nandy.

However, the court rapped Nandy and said that he should not be making statements like the one at the Jaipur  Literary Festival.

The apex court heard Nandy's petition seeking protection from arrest for an alleged anti-Dalit remark he made at the Jaipur Literary Festival. Nandy has requested the apex court to quash all the FIRs registered against him.

The court has sent notices to the governments of Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Bihar.

At a panel discussion at the literary festival on January 26, Nandy had said: "Most corrupt people come from the Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes."
